2In the case of a mass military observance in a military ceremony, as for example on Memorial Day, when the graves are decorated with flowers should the chaplain request that an exception be made with regard to the graves of Jewish soldiers, so that no flowers be put upon them?

4The objection to planting flowers and shrubs on graves is based upon the principle that the living may not derive benefit from the earth of the grave (asur b'hanaah). However, this applies to permanent planting. The objection to extravagant display does not apply in the case where once or twice a year a few flowers are placed on all the graves in a military ceremony.

5The chaplain need not ask for any exception to be made in this case with regard to the graves of Jewish soldiers, since this decoration is for the honor of the dead (mip'ne kevod ha-meth).
