1Rabbinic literature has addressed attention to issues relating to the body for centuries. But the rabbis were not systematic in their analysis of this topic, even in the books or responsa dedicated to related subjects. The discourse and material for these contributions had to be culled and synthesized, and then analyzed.

2Awareness of one’s body is in vogue. Today’s woman is far more conscious, educated, and aware of her body than she has ever been. This section is an attempt to place this heightened awareness in the context of Halakha.

3The following five essays address this topic from this point of view. As is the case with almost every subject discussed by the rabbis over the centuries, their analyses range in approach and attitude. And, while the internal logic of the authors is consistent, their halakhic presentations are surprising in many ways.
